Hypnotherapy for depression

Have you been diagnosed with depression or are you feeling that maybe you are depressed then don’t worry you are not alone. In fact statistics show that 1 in 4 people will experience some kind of mental health problem in the course of a year and mixed anxiety and depression is the most common mental disorder in Britain today.

So what exactly is depression?

Often people say they are depressed when they are merely feeling a bit fed up or low if this is the case you will probably be able to continue with your everyday life it may just be more of a struggle.

However when it is more serious, depression can be debilitating even life-threatening, because people may become suicidal. Various forms of depression exist and therefore diagnosis is best left to properly qualified medical professionals; e.g. Your GP. Hypnotherapy and coaching can be used effectively alongside your GP to help manage the symptoms created by depression.

How do I know if I am depressed?

There are many symptoms signs of depression some physical signs might be sleeping problems, lack of energy, unexplained weight gain or loss, unexplained aches and pains, loss of libido, feeling anxious or agitated, excessive use of alcohol or other substance abuse, being irritable or impatient, difficulty remembering things, inability to concentrate or make decisions, feelings of low self esteem or a lack of confidence, feeling disconnected or helpless, experiencing lots of negative emotions such as guilt, shame, or anger.

What is the cause of depression?

The cause of depression can vary and can be the result of a combination of factors. It is still unclear if depression is actually inherited but it does seem that some people are more prone to depression than others. This could be because of our genes, life experiences or family background.

Past experiences have an effect on how we feel about ourselves today and if those feelings are very negative, they can be the start of a downward spiral resulting in depression. In many cases, the first time someone becomes depressed, it's triggered by a traumatic event, such as being made redundant, getting divorced, etc.
